I'm pretty sure that the ticking sound is a result of the cam followers, or other components in the OHC set-up. While efficient, OHC set-ups are not nearly as quiet as the old push-rod valve systems. You might need a expander tool to grab into the lifter top to remove them. Maybe the newer engine like the 5.3 are different though.
